What are Tooth Extractions?

Tooth extractions are dental procedures where a tooth is removed from its socket in the bone. This might be necessary due to various reasons, including severe tooth decay, gum disease, or damage that cannot be repaired by other means. The extraction process involves numbing the area to ensure a painless experience, followed by carefully loosening and removing the tooth. Depending on the complexity, extractions can be straightforward or surgical.

Why Would You Need Tooth Extractions?

Tooth extractions are often necessary to protect your oral health, especially when a tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or affected by advanced gum disease. Impacted teeth, like wisdom teeth, can cause pain and misalignment, making extraction the best solution. In some cases, extractions are needed to relieve overcrowding before orthodontic treatments. While typically a last resort, tooth extraction is crucial for preventing further complications and maintaining overall dental health.

What makes you a candidate for Tooth Extractions?

Before you can come in and have an extraction done, we will need to perform an exam. Certain extractions, especially impacted wisdom teeth, require a CT scan prior to the surgery being performed. We will consult with you on which teeth should be removed and what to expect. You’ll be given aftercare instructions that promote quick and easy healing of the surgical site.

What can you expect with a Tooth Extraction?

You will receive anesthetic or sedation of your choosing when having this procedure done. Next, our doctor will use tools to remove the tooth out of its socket. The area may be sutured to keep it closed and promote quicker healing. We’ll give you a piece of gauze to bite down on and you’ll be instructed to remove it after about an hour. You’ll need to follow our aftercare instructions so that the area heals properly. If there are any post-op complications, contact us immediately so that we can get you in.
