Post-Op Instructions for Dental Implants in Austin & Round Rock, TX

Protect Your Implant. Heal Properly. Smile Confidently.

What to Expect in the First 24–48 Hours

Bleeding

  • Bite down gently on the provided gauze pad for 30–45 minutes.
  • If bleeding persists, replace with clean gauze and continue applying light pressure.
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing forcefully, or using straws—these can dislodge the blood clot.

Swelling

Swelling is a common response to oral surgery and may peak 48 hours after the procedure.

  • Apply ice packs to the outside of the cheek near the surgical area for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, during the first 24 hours.
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first 1–2 nights to minimize swelling.
  • If swelling increases significantly after 3 days or is accompanied by fever, contact us immediately.

Pain & Medication

  • Take your prescribed pain medications or over-the-counter options exactly as directed.
  • Start medications before numbness wears off to stay ahead of discomfort.
  • Complete the full course of any prescribed antibiotics.

Oral Hygiene & Implant Site Care

First 24 Hours

  • Do not rinse, brush near the surgical site, or floss.

After 24 Hours

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (½ tsp salt in 8 oz warm water) after meals and before bed.
  • Resume brushing your other teeth, avoiding the surgical area.
  • After 1 week, you may gently clean around the implant using a soft toothbrush or implant-specific cleaning tools (as instructed by Dr. Shah).

Smoking & Activity Restrictions

  • Do not smoke or vape for at least 72 hours—ideally for several days. Smoking delays healing and significantly increases implant failure risk.
  • Limit physical activity and rest for the first 2–3 days.
  • Avoid bending, lifting, or strenuous exercise that could raise your heart rate or blood pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants in Austin & Round Rock, TX

Get in Touch
  • After your dental implant procedure at Clover Smile Studio, it's normal to experience mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort for a few days. Dr. Karnik Shah may prescribe pain relief or recommend over-the-counter medication to manage this. Rest, hydration, and avoiding hard or hot foods can help speed up healing.

  • Avoid brushing the surgical site for the first 24 hours. After that, gently clean the area using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day, especially after meals, but avoid using mouthwash with alcohol until the area has healed.

  • Stick to soft, cool foods for the first 48 hours — think smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods. As your comfort improves, you can gradually return to your normal diet, based on your dentist’s guidance.

  • If you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain that doesn’t improve with medication, fever, or signs of infection like pus or a foul taste, contact your dentist immediately. These could be signs of complications that need prompt attention.

  • Initial healing usually takes about one to two weeks. However, the full integration of the implant with your jawbone can take three to six months. During this time, you’ll have follow-up visits to monitor progress and prepare for the final restoration.
